Brasilia, Contradictions of a New City
In 1967, de Andrade was invited by the Italian business Olivetti to generate a docudrama on the new Brazilian capital city of BrasÃlia. Constructed during the latter half of the 1950s and also founded in 1960, the city belonged to an initiative to occupy Brazil's huge interior region and was to be the personification of autonomous urban planning, devoid of the class divisions as well as inequalities that identify many cities. Unsurprisingly, BrasÃlia, Contradições de uma Cidade Nova (BrasÃlia, Oppositions of a New City, 1968) revealed BrasÃlia to be utopic only for the rich, reproducing the exact same social problems present in every Brazilian city.
